Information Being Sent

SMS a GPS is able to send the device location via a SMS message that will contain a link that automatically launches SMS a GPS with the appropriate location information.

This is done by creating a link that is registered with the device to load SMS a GPS. The information that is contained in the link includes the name entered in Settings, the phone number or email address to reply to, the time the position fix was acquired, the latitude and longitude of the fix. No other information is sent.

For example, a location message may be as follows:

“John Doe’s location with SMS a GPS, SMSaGPS://?John_Doe,555-555-1234,101205165512=32.341583,-119.194639”

Pressing the link will load the information as a waypoint in SMS a GPS.

SMS a GPS Link Syntax:

Message,SMSaGPS://?user_name,phonenumber,YYMMDDHHMMSS,=latitude,longitude

Message - A brief message about the link.
user_name - User name entered in settings.

phonenumber - The phone number that the link came from.
YYMMDDHHMMSS - Time of fix, two digits are used to represent year, month, day, hour, minute and second.
latitude - The latitude of the global position fix, decimal formatted.
longitude - The longitude of the global position fix in decimal format.

The link must not contain any spaces. When the link is assembled, all spaces are replaced by the underscore character.

If a Maps link is used instead of a SMS a GPS link, the same information is included in a different format to enable the link to open in the Maps app or in a browser when opened on a computer.
