MIDI Remote

MIDI devices can be used to control prompter features. Prompter controls can be assigned to program changes, control changes, notes and pitch bend. There are many devices that can be used as MIDI remotes, ranging from keyboards, hand held remotes, foot pedals, even computers running MIDI software.

Access MIDI Remote Settings

  1. Press the Settings button.
  2. Select the Remotes menu.
  3. Select the MIDI option.

Connection Notes

Follow the instructions that came with your MIDI device to connect to iOS. Some devices can be connected using the standard bluetooth MIDI interface, but some may require connection using an app published by the manufacturer.

Note: For the iRig Blueboard, establish connection and configure the device using the Blueboard app.

Connecting Bluetooth MIDI Devices

  1. Turn on the power to the bluetooth MIDI device. Prepare it for connection in accordance with the instructions that came with the device.
  2. From the MIDI Remote settings, press the Connect button. The Connect button is next to the Edit button.
  3. Select the Bluetooth Central option.
  4. Select the device to connect to from the list of bluetooth MIDI devices.
  5. When prompted, select the option to pair with the device.
  6. Wait for the device to indicate it is connected.
  7. Press the Back button.
  8. The connected device will appear in the list of available devices.
  9. If not already selected, select the device's Source option to use it as a MIDI source.
  10. Optionally, select the Destination option if MIDI data should be sent to the device. Advanced users only.
  11. Press the Back button to return to the MIDI settings.
  12. Use a control on the MIDI device. The MIDI message will appear at the top of the menu.
Note: The Connect button shows the connected sources on the left of the MIDI icon and connected destinations on the right of the MIDI icon.

Add MIDI Controls

  1. Press the Edit button to enter edit mode.
  2. Press the + button to add a new MIDI control.

Configure MIDI Control

  1. Select a control from the list of MIDI controls, or add a new MIDI control.
  2. If the MIDI device is connected, use a MIDI control on the device. The MIDI message will be displayed at the top of the menu.
  3. Press the Use button to assign the last MIDI message to the MIDI control. This will automatically assign the last MIDI message to the control, using the channel, type and value.
  4. If needed, change the MIDI Control Type.
  5. If needed, change the channel number.
  6. If needed, change the program, control or note number.
  7. Optionally, add a Control Label. This will be visible in the settings to give a description for the control.
  8. Select the Prompter Control option.
  9. Select a prompter control from the list to use for the MIDI control.
  10. If the prompter control requires a value, select Assign MIDI Value to use the value from the MIDI message, select Add MIDI Value to add the value from the MIDI message to the control's current value, or select Assign Custom Value to enter a specific custom value for the control.
  11. If Assign Custom Value is selected, enter a Custom Value to be used for the MIDI control.
Notes: When MIDI values are used from MIDI messages, the value is converted to a percentage and will range from 0% to 100%. Custom values also range from 0% to 100%.
The pitch bend control has a range from 0-16383, all other MIDI messages range from 0-127.

Assigning Controls to Repeat Messages/Double Press

  1. Configure the Double Press option.
  2. At the top of the menu select the •• presses option.
  3. Select a control from the list to configure the double press option. Or create a new control.
  4. Select the Double Press Prompter Control option.
  5. Select a prompter control to assign to the double press.
  6. If the prompter control requires a value, assign it a value as outlined in Configure MIDI Control.
Note: It is not possible to use the double press feature with pitch bend. In order for a message to be considered the same, the MIDI control type, channel, control/program/note must be received two times consecutively.

Filter Controls

Controls can be filtered to only view relevant controls. Controls can be filtered by type and channel.

  1. Pull down on the list to show the filter options.
  2. Tap a channel button to filter it in or out of the list.
  3. Tap a type button to filter it in or out of the list.
  4. Tap and hold on a channel or control type to only show that item.

Send Prompter Control Changes

Enable this option to have send this MIDI message to connected MIDI destinations when the corresponding prompter control is used. If the prompter control uses a value, the current prompter value is sent to the destinations. For example, if a control change uses the MIDI value to control the scroll location, enabling this option would send the scroll location to connected destinations when the scroll position is changed in the prompter. The value sent to the destinations ranges from 0-127 or 0-16383.

Record MIDI

Enable this option to allow the MIDI message to be recorded when the prompter control is used. A MIDI sequence must also be recording.

Connect as Peripheral

It is possible to connect to devices and software that can also connect using bluetooth MIDI. This can be used to send prompter activity to other devices or software. This feature is intended for advanced users only.

  1. Access the MIDI Remote settings.
  2. Press the Connect button.
  3. Select the Bluetooth Peripheral option.
  4. Enter a name for the device to be advertised as.
  5. Enable the Advertise MIDI Service option.
  6. Ensure that the Send/Receive MIDI option is sent to Send or Send/Receive.
  7. For controls that should send MIDI changes, enable the Send Prompter Control Changes option.
  8. Using configured controls on the prompter will send the changes to connected devices.
